Here’s your mission if you choose to accept it. You have 24 hours to improve your website. What can you do to drive more traffic to your site? What simple changes can you make to improve your SEO and be seen?

Here are a few quick and easy ways you can improve your website in less than 24 hours.

Improve your page titles

Make your onsite and meta titles as relevant as possible to the content on your site. This is the first point of reference for users and they need to be able to identify exactly what your site is about and what kind of experience to expect when visiting your site. You want your meta-title to attract potential users not confuse or deter them with irrelevant or unclear page titles, Googles algorithm doesn’t take kindly to these kinds of page titles and chances are neither will your users.

We recommend keeping your page titles short and concise you have a limited amount of space when constructing your page titles so keep them between 55- 60 characters long to avoid ellipses… Remove all unnecessary words that lengthen your title and don’t aid in getting your point across. Create unique titles for each page, duplicate titles won’t help you here.

Upgrade your old blog posts or start blogging

Blogging is a great way to keep your website updated with fresh new content. It’s awesome for SEO and the content you generate can be shared via your social media channels.

It’s fair to say that static websites don’t rank well with search engines, so a weekly blog post is one of the best ways to continually add new content to your website and keep it relevant. Great news – we now have digital marketing packages that include regular blog posts! If you already blog, revisit your old articles and make sure they’re still relevant and the information isn’t out of date.

Test your page loading time

Let’s face it, no one likes waiting for a slow, sluggish website to load. More often than not customers will abandon your page and click on the next business listed on their Google search. Check the loading speed of your page to ensure it’s not turning potential customers away.

Google has a host of tools for performance testing your site. Use Page Speed Insights to analyse your sites speed on mobile and desktop devices.  Page Speed Insights will generate a report with suggested improvements for speeding up a sluggish site.

Generally speaking, fast pages are roughly in the top ~10%, average pages are in the next 40%, and slow pages are in the bottom 50%. – Google


Delete replicated content

Another thing search engines don’t take kindly to is replicated or duplicated content. Avoid repetition at all costs and just get to the point

Add alt text for SEO

An easy way to improve your website and help it rank higher with search engines is to add alternate text to your images. Alt text is the code behind the image that acts as a description and will help search engines identify and find your content. For example, in WordPress you can edit your Alt text as seen below.



Use Googles Lighthouse audit

This is a great open source tool free for anyone to use on their website. Lighthouse will generate a detailed report highlighting areas of your site that need improvement, some you might be able to quickly fix yourself boosting performance, accessibility, SEO and best practises. Other more technical improvements can be handed over to your developer.

10 Things To Avoid On Your Website

Whether you’re preparing to launch a new website, or just curious about how to better promote your business online, these are the things you should avoid (and the ways you can fix them)….

1. Vague Headlines


Your homepage header should be the pinnacle of your website. It should be explicit in telling your visitors who you are and what you offer. Often a homepage headline will offer a general statement about quality about value, and can fail in explaining what your business actually does.


Fix: Try to develop a short description that includes the title of your trade. So… “custom made for your business” would become “custom websites made for your business”.


2. Social Media Icons


Social media traffic is great, but only if it’s flowing toward you. When visitors leave your site and go to a social network, they are unlikely to return. You want to make sure your visitor has fully experienced your website before moving on to your social media.


Fix: Move social media icons into your footer, rather than your header. Try avoid colourful icons, and instead keep them minimal in colour while still staying visible.


3. Dated Blog Posts


If your content strategy is to write and share helpful “how to” articles that are useful to your audience and don’t go out of style, then why show the date? Adding dates, especially to the top of your blog post, can make the content seem old or out-dated.


Fix: Remove the date stamp from your post, or move it to the bottom of the post. Out of sight, out of mind.


4. Long Paragraphs


Some visitors read, but all visitors scan. Having short paragraphs of information is the best way to utilise visitors scanning your website. Don’t overwhelm your visitor with endless information that, really, they don’t need to know.


Fix: Keep your paragraphs under three or four lines or add formatting to your content to make it more scannable (ie. bullet points or internal links).


5. Your Own Ads


We have all conditioned ourselves to look away from ads. If it looks like an ad, we ignore it. However, many business owners will still display banner ads for themselves on their websites. It’s the worst way to get your visitor’s attention.


Fix: Promote your content within your content rather than through obvious and obstructive banner ads or add simple call to action text above your footer.


6. Testimonials Page


Testimonials are “social proof” which is a key aspect of web design and neuromarketing. However, your testimonials should be close to the claim. If it’s on a separate page, or out of context then it’s weak proof and virtually meaningless.


Fix: Add testimonials to every page of your site, keeping them in clear context of the context of the page.


7. Email Links


Email links fail on every criterion for good marketing, from messaging and routing to usability and tracking. Not only that, but email links are spam magnets. Spammers use robots that scrape the web for email addresses. So that email link on your website is filling up your spam folder.


Fix: Remove every email link from your website and add a simple contact form instead and consider setting up an auto-response email, telling your new leads when you’ll be in touch or thanking them for contacting you.


8. The “Submit” Button


A call to action is an opportunity to tell the visitor what benefit they’re about to receive. Or, at least, what action they’re taking. A good call to action is specific and benefit driven. A bad call to action says nothing. For example, a button that just says “submit.” The more descriptive the call to action, the higher the conversion rate


Fix: Use first person and description language and highlight the benefit to the visitor in your call to action.


9. Dead End Pages


If your page only consists of two lonely words at the top of the page, it might as well say “good-bye”. Right at the peak of their interest, just as you convert them…you give them nothing. But if the thank you page offers the visitor a subsequent action, they’re likely to take it.


Fix: Give the visitor another subsequent action to take. You’ve already gotten them this far. Then, find and fix every dead end on your website and keep visitors constantly flowing.


10. Unreadable Fonts


There are many font options that will give your brand a professional and sophisticated look, but you want to make sure you are making a comfortable experience for your visitors. The overuse of fonts and text sizes can distract your visitor from the real message you wish to give across.


Fix: Keep it minimal. Use a mixture of 3 or 4 varying text sizes and choose a maximum of 2 (complimentary) fonts to use across your page.

Static Hosting with Amazon AWS S3 buckets and Cloudfront

To host a static website, you configure an Amazon S3 bucket for website hosting, and then upload your website content to the bucket.

The Following guide will take you though the process to setup a fast loading static site.

1. Go to the AWS Console

Here you will sign in and direct yourself to the navigation bar.

  • In the ‘Services’ dropdown menu click on the ‘S3’ link under ‘Storage’

2. Create a bucket

Make sure you name it with the exact domain name.

  • Select region: In our case it is Sydney
  • Continue to create the bucket
  • Once created click on your bucket and go into ‘Properties’
  • Click on ‘Static Website Hosting’
  • To enable, add index document – index.html
  • Go to ‘Permissions’ – click ‘Bucket Policy’

3. Create a Hosted Zone

  • In the ‘Settings’ drop down menu click on ‘Route53’ link under ‘Networking’
  • Go to ‘Hosted Zones’ – Create a hosted zone

4. Create ‘Record Set’

  • Under ‘ALIAS’ click ‘YES’ – Wait until target matches bucket created and select it (this may take a while to load… be patient)
  • Don’t forget the www alias
  • Add your other DNS settings as normal
  • Click create at bottom

Enjoy the almost free hosting! ٩(•̤̀ᵕ•̤́๑)

Now make it globally fast and add a free auto renewing SSL with the CloudFront CDN.

Request a certificate with the certificate manager. You will need to verify ownership of the domain with a validation email that is sent. So you will need a working email system for the domain.

Once you have the site on an S3 Bucket and can see this working well setup a CloudFront distribution for this site. The SSL works only through CloudFront.

  1. Important add Alternate Domain Names such as www.your_domain_name or it won’t show up in Route53
  2. Important Use the Certificate Manager (ACM) located in the US East (N. Virginia)
  3. Set origin and current web address.
  4. Leave other settings as default
  5. Select your SSL certificate in your Distribution Settings
  6. Specify a default root object ie index.html

Once your distribution is setup and Deployed correctly… in Route53 you should be able to select it in the A records as an “Alias Target”
